Healthy Fats, Does eating fat make you gain weight?
Does eating fat make you gain weight?
It had been established by medical science for years that fat is the
cause of heart disease, blood pressure, and gaining weight. As weight gain
is actually the deposition of fat in our body. Does this fat really come from
the fat we eat?
The new research is proving all of
it to be wrong.
All of us are familiar with different categories of fats as
·
Saturated,
·
Poly unsaturated
·
Monounsaturated fats.
The function of fat in our body
·
The fat insulates our body
effectively from hot and cold.
·
They are the components of the cell
membrane structure, so they are a part of all living cells.
·
They help us store excess food and
use it later as an energy source. In the condition of prolonged fasting.
·
Cholesterol is the molecule used by
our skin cells to make vitamin D using sunlight, so if you want to regulate
your blood cholesterol, you must go out in sun to convert it to vitamin D,
rather than keep taking Vitamin D supplements.
· They are also involved in May metabolic
processes necessary for reproduction, immune function, and growth.
It is very much obvious why we need
fat in our diet. We just need to know the right type and right amount of fat to
include in our diet.
Are saturated fats the cause of heart disease and blood pressure?
Yes,
It has been established with
multiple studies that certain types of saturated fats in larger amounts can
cause the levels of LDL to rise and that is a cause of heart and blood pressure
issues. And the LDL level is reduced by stopping the consumption of saturated fats.
But the category of fats like polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, also
called good fats are beneficial. One example is omega 3 generally found in fish
oil, and almonds, and is an excellent source to reduce bad cholesterol levels. It
is a treatment for the damage caused by eating saturated fats containing
bad cholesterol.
The studies reveal that the replacement
of some saturated fat with unsaturated fat in our diet can lead to
Reduction in the risk of death,
increasing longevity.
Help cater to some neurodegenerative disorders
And improves heart health.
Do fats cause weight gain?
No,
Several studies completely establish
that cutting down on Fats will not help you reduce a single gram of weight. On the
other hand saturated fats when burned by the body, cause the insulin
sensitivity which we want. It actually creates insulin resistance for fat cells.
As we don’t want to let the fat deposit in our body. On the other hand, unsaturated fats do the opposite, they tend to create insulin sensitivity to
fat cells, means causing the fat cells to deposit in the body and cause weight
gain. Unsaturated fats generally come from vegetable oil and margarine etc.
Comparison to carbs. How are they processed by our digestive system?
If we look at the digestion of
carbohydrates, the amylase present in the saliva in our mouth starts digesting
it instantly. The small sugar molecules can even be completely digested in the mouth and become an instant source of energy and also elevate blood sugar
levels. It is completely broken down in our intestine and absorbed into the
bloodstream. All the sugar being
instantly digested leads to an increase in your appetite and craving to take in
more carbohydrates (sugar, starch, etc.)
On the other hand, the fats do not start being digested instantly, they travel all the way from the mouth, through the stomach into the intestine without being digested. Here in the intestine, the bile juices from the liver help emulsify fat. Then gradually once emulsified, it is broken down by the enzymes secreted by the pancreas. Now it is ready to be absorbed into the bloodstream. This slow processing of fast makes its way to the bloodstream a lot slower, not causing any insulin trigger. So it does not result in storage of the excess fat we eat.
Secondly, the good fat staying for longer in your digestive system gives you a feeling of fullness for a longer period of time, resulting in an overall lesser intake of food.
Are saturated fats bad for you?
So it is an established fact now that good fats whether saturated or unsaturated, have their benefits in our diet. So we
should not stop using any kind of healthy fat, especially from natural
resources like dairy, olive oil, and mustard oil.
